Senegal took control of their last group game against Ecuador, positioning themselves well to advance from Group A Ecuador vs Senegal.
Just before halftime, Ismaila Sarr’s penalty earned the Lions of Teranga a well-deserved advantage that put them ahead of their rivals and into second position behind group leaders Netherlands.
The African champions were initially dismayed by a string of wasted opportunities despite needing a victory to advance to the Round of 16 barring an unlikely Qatar victory over the Netherlands.
Before Boulaye Dia dragged his shot wide of the far post, Idrissa Gueye sliced an early attempt wide of the right post.
Before Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapie fouled Sarr in the box and the Watford forward picked himself up to calmly score the penalty, Iliman Ndiaye and Iliman Ndiaye both sent shots wide.
Ecuador, who defeated Qatar in their opening game before tying the Netherlands 1-1 in their second match, would advance for just the second time in their World Cup history with a draw.
